TDF Cloud and Western Digital – A Case Study
TDF Cloud – The Success Story
The Digital Foundry was founded in 1986 and from the beginning, has played a key role in providing solid, dependable and timely delivered infrastructure solutions to an emerging world of technology users. Our core belief has always been to provide the best possible solution for any environment using hardware that would always maintain the high level of performance and reliability that we ourselves, would expect for our own enterprises.
“Western Digital has always been a part of our success from our very first solutions and has remained so until present day.” – Steve Gordon, Founding Partner.
From the start, the team at The Digital Foundry have watched an ever changing world of IT hungry businesses and users grow and developed turnkey solutions to suit the needs of those enterprises. As a result in 2013 The Digital Foundry (TDF) team decided to consolidate and rebrand their already established hosted solutions business sector in to an independent business presence. TDF Cloud Services was born.
To bring the already established hosted business environment that TDF had been providing for many years in to the new model, the team developing the new hardware platform that would see TDF Cloud Services ability to deliver mission critical hosted services and solutions, needed to be totally guaranteed of their success
“Our biggest concern was that our current physical infrastructure, relying totally on ‘in server’ storage would not be able to support the new and modern Microsoft Hosted Operating Environment. To continue down this path would increase both the cost and physical footprint of our already overpopulated data center racks.”
The only viable option for TDF Cloud Services new hosted environment was to start from the beginning with a focus on 2013 and beyond. This would see a new plan emerge offering the flexibility of a fully redundant model involving virtualization and shared storage.
“I still have my original 80 Megabyte Western Digital Caviar 280 Hard Drive running today. Works like the first day I bought it.” – Victor Hong, Technical Solutions Architect.
To move to the shared storage model was the first and highest priority, the rest of the solution platform was to grow from that point. As TDF had always had a brilliant relationship with the Western Digital product range from the very beginning, it made sense to stay with this proven solution and look deeper into the Enterprise offerings available. We were drawn to the new Datacenter Storage Portfolio from WD.
“The new Re SAS drives offered durable, high capacity storage for our high availability environment, lowering the total cost of ownership while continuing to provide a large scale robust platform to build on. – it just made a lot of sense.”
TDF Cloud Services chose to implement The Western Digital Re SAS drives across their shared storage farm powered by Synology RC Series 10GbE SAN’s, fronted with Dell 14th Generation PowerEdge servers.
The total solution offered the best flexibility in both growth and performance, leveraging virtualization and iSCSI technologies to produce a solution that would not only give our customers the highest quality solution but also allow us to sleep easy knowing that the hardware used would be able to deliver the highest standards and redundancy possible.
“The new Re SAS drives offered durable, high capacity storage for our high availability environment, lowering the total cost of ownership while continuing to provide a large scale robust platform to build on.” – Mick Evans, CEO.
Simply put, the Western Digital Re SAS drives delivered!
With a significant increase in storage capacity and speed the new solution is truly mind blowing. We expected performance improvements but were very surprised and very happy to see just how fast and reliable it was.
- We reduced our costs by reducing twenty core servers down to eight.
- We reduced power consumption by up to 40%
- We moved “host” storage to 10Gb iSCSI LUN’s powered by WD Re drives
- We reduced complexity thru decrease in footprint and consolidated technologies
- We improved performance with the ability to host more virtual server guests per host
- We improved availability and performance with enterprise grade hard drives
It will always be the case that the industry and client demands evolve. With the TDF Cloud Services platform powered by Western Digital Re Datacenter products we can be assured that we can evolve with them and continue to provide service excellence within the boutique hosted solutions marketplace.
